20 YEARS AGO, THE IRON CURTAIN was fell, and with it the closed borders to the states of the Eastern Bloc. Decades of Cold War and the arms race were over. Austria was no longer wedged in between the large political blocs of “the West” and “the East” but found itself in the heart of a European continent growing together.
For the 20th anniversary of the events of the historic year of 1989, the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of has planned a series of events in and outside Austria.
Other institutions in many different places—in Austria and abroad—also commemorate the anniversary. On our website www.1989-2009.at we keep you posted about current and upcoming projects, events, and publications on the subject.
